Aerogel blanket on geothermal steam gathering lines

Re-insulating two-phase gathering lines where the old mineral wool had wet through, using a blanket that gets the same thermal result in a fraction of the thickness.

Geothermal gathering lines are a hard case for insulation. They run hot, they run wet on the outside, and they are almost never anywhere convenient. The lines in this scope had been insulated conventionally, and the jacketing had been repaired often enough that nobody trusted what was underneath it any more.
The argument for changing material rather than repeating the repair is thickness. Pyrogel® XTE is a flexible aerogel blanket rated for high-temperature service, and it reaches the same surface temperature in appreciably less build-up than mineral wool. On a line that has to be re-clad in place, on scaffolding, that is not a thermal argument at all. It is a labour and access argument.
What went in
- Pyrogel® XTE blanket on the hot gathering lines and their valve bodies.
- Cryogel® Z where the scope crossed into sub-ambient service, which is the same blanket family with a vapour barrier.
Both are hydrophobic, which matters more here than the lambda value: the failure mode being designed out was water sitting against steel, not heat loss. The full range and its temperature limits are on the Insulation page.
Insulating a line that has already failed once
Send the line size, the operating temperature and what is currently on it. We will come back with a thickness and a blanket.
