Breather valves and flame arresters across a product tank farm
Normal venting, emergency venting and flame protection are three separate jobs on an atmospheric tank. Specifying them as one package is what keeps the roof on.

An atmospheric tank breathes. Fill it and vapour has to leave; empty it or let it cool and air has to come back. A breather valve handles that. What a breather valve does not handle is the fire case, where the relieving rate is an order of magnitude higher, and it does not stop a flame travelling back down the vent.
So the schedule for each tank came out in three parts, which is the shape API 2000 pushes you towards whether or not you start there.
What went in
- KSBB/BS pressure vacuum relief valves for normal in-breathing and out-breathing.
- KSEP emergency vent covers for the fire case, where the rate is set by heat input rather than by pumping.
- KSFI in-line flame arresters, explosion and deflagration proof, 15 mm to 600 mm.
- KSBBFI/BSF where layout made a combined breather and arrester the simpler fitting: one body, one flange, both functions.
Deflagration and detonation are not the same protection problem, and an arrester rated for one is not automatically rated for the other. Where a detonation was credible the answer was UFD, which is built to absorb the shock as well as quench the flame.
Working through a tank's vent schedule
Tank diameter, working and design pressure, the product stored and whether the vapour space can reach a flame. Those four answer most of the schedule.
